Cruising

Today we’re at sea for the whole day and are enjoying what the Grand Princess has to offer. The ship was apparently the flagship of the Princess cruise line for many years and has 17 decks holding over 3,000 passengers.

A map and our itinerary below starting in Vancouver. I had picked a one way cruise as I felt that the time to return would be unnecessarily consuming. Also I wanted to end in Anchorage, so we could go up to Denali National Park after the cruise:

I had selected rooms with a window as I thought that would be helpful in dealing with any motion sickness and not to feel too cocooned. I had requested 2 twins for my mom and myself and Justin got a double bed which is not pictured:

Although we had grand plans to go to the gym, I ended up watching my mom at the fitness dance party and the whole group ended up on deck 14 at the Horizon buffet breakfast where we especially enjoyed bacon, banana smoothies, and juicy pineapple. We also special ordered some juices as that was all a part of our package. It was also super sunny up on the deck with a nice view of our cruise ship’s wake:

Afterwards the ladies walked the 7th deck promenade - 3 loops make a mile. We managed to only do 2 and enjoyed watching the wake and listening to some music through our favorite audio sunglasses:

I then napped while others chatted away waiting for the merengue and the line dancing classes. So I headed down to the line dancing class thinking everyone would be there, but they were still on the couches upstairs. Nonetheless, they came down and jumped into the fun. I took fun videos as our karaoke host from last night channeled Jennifer Lopez and my mom’s Zumba skills were very apparent.

Then we shared some pizzas at Alfredo’s, which is supposedly one of the best of the cruises and ended with a tiramisu and some specialty coffees.

For the afternoon, my cousin and I headed to the 14th deck pools and picked the Calypso which is covered. We enjoyed the hot tub and the chattiness of a 6 year old boy from Illinois. We alternated between the pool and hot tub and my cousin also swam laps. There’s something about back-stroking in the middle of the ocean and looking at the sky that really brings your blood pressure down…I really enjoyed relaxing and the time here. A photo of the pool’s ceiling:

We had reservations in the Botticelli dining room which was a bit tricky to get to, but we made it in time for our reservation. My brother, mom, and I had a tasty crab cake, duck breast, steak, Alaskan halibut, and duck l’orange:

Afterwards, we enjoyed the Billy Joel tribute, British Invasion production show, and the start of the Abba party. My aunt and mom may have napped a little during the British Invasion show, but my cousin and I enjoyed the heart and cheesiness of the performers who were very endearing.

We ended at one of the bars where a duet, called the Charme Duo sang the likes of Abba, Roy Orbison, Elvis, and Paul Anka. Listening to this repertoire brought us memories of my dad and my uncle for my cousin. Here’s a photo of these dancing queens….

Indeed, it was an entertainment filled night and as we enjoyed the Grand Princess activities all day long at sea! What fun we had and an extra hour to boot as we crossover into the Alaskan time zone!
