So today is my last full day in Bali which was spent on the beach and poolside, and eating at the hotel. It was nicer than yesterday as there were less kids and the beach was cleaner. The night before yesterday, there had been a lot of rain and there were a lot of leaves and etc on the beach. My day was relatively uneventful except for the Russian who tries to talk to me, but can't speak any English and the squirrel that started dropping nuts on me and some Europeans while we were relaxing poolside.
To recap, a few things I learned about Bali:
1. The Balinese are so spiritual and everyday they put out offerings and pray for what they need and for what they are thankful for. I need to remind myself of this when I'm back in NY.
2. Anger or frustration is a strange concept to them. There is such a level of calm. This is probably why everything runs on island time - about 30 minutes behind and they don't react to nor understand your frustration (i.e. When I was forgotten at the airport). In most situations, there is no point in getting angry while on vacation or back at home.
3. As Bina, my temple driver, and I watched farmers picking rice, he says he reminds his 3 kids that each grain of rice is handpicked and takes a lot of hard work. Therefore food and other necessities should not be wasted.
4. If I ever come back to Bali, I should consider renting a motorbike. Much easier to get around then walking on makeshift sidewalks and maps that make things appear closer than they really are and do not show the hills. Matt, Ri's husband, had suggested it but I was too scared. Seeing 12 year olds with no helmet and the fact that the congestion results in 10-15 mph speeds, I may consider it in the future.
5. 7% deet just isn't enough to fend off mosquitos! I should have brought my 100% deet bottle.
Off to bed soon as I have an early day in heading back to Singapore!
