3rd time to Spain! My first trip was in 2014 with my friend Nakia and then again in 2017 to celebrate my parents’ milestone birthdays. Both times I explored the south, but this time I’m headed north!
Mary Ann, a friend I met through our mutual friend Jamie, and I have been talking about walking the Camino De Santiago for years! Mary Ann and I also traveled to Peru together back in 2013 and had many fun adventures! With the 4th of July holiday landing on a Thursday and the office closed on Friday, I thought this was a good year to go! Although we will have to brave the European heat wave and summer crowds, we are very excited!
This is a catholic pilgrimage where folks since the medieval times walked to the northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela where they end at the cathedral and the supposed burial place of St. James the Apostle.
In order to get the certificate, you have to walk at least 100 kms or the equivalent of 62 miles which we will accomplish across 5 days. The traditional “French Way” from the Pyrenees mountains takes about a month!
Mary Ann’s younger sister will meet us from Germany and we’ll rendezvous in Madrid and head north after months of anticipation and WhatsApp discussions.
Mary Ann and I met at JFK airport where we shared a drink and boarded our flight. My stomach was a bit uneasy - I have been going nonstop for months and working extremely late nights, so I think my body was reacting to a mix of things.
Well I hope it reinvigorates as I get ready for the trek under the Spanish sun!
